First, thanks to anyone who is willing to help me out. This is the first time that I have worn contact lenses, so I am curious about some things, particularly since my optometrist didn’t really answer my questions when I asked her. I figure some experienced contact lens wearers may have some of the answers —
1) I have been wearing contacts for about a week and a half, but every time that I put them in my eyes really sting for about a minute or two. I clean them after taking them out of the case before putting them in, but it still stings. Is this normal for a new contact lens wearer? Could it be the solution?
2) I have dry eyes and I have heard that the more water content in the lens, the faster that it dries your eyes out. Is this true? I currently use SofLens 66 Toric (very slight astigmatism), which is 66% H2O. My eyes do get dry on occasion, so I was wondering if maybe I should ask to have my brand changed to something with less water.
3) Is it normal for your vision to blur and your eyes to feel dryer than usual while working on the computer or watching TV? Is this something that happens regardless of the brand that you use? It never happens while wearing my glasses, so I’m just wondering if I should stick to glasses when working on the computer and/or if that is even normal.
4) Brand specific - Does anyone know if a monthly disposable of SofLens 66 Toric even exists? My optometrist told me that I can wear the ones that I currently have for a month; however, I’ve looked my specific brand up online and I can only find 1-2 week disposables of that same brand. I went to Lens Crafters and they confirmed that they are indeed ONLY 1-2 week disposables, not monthly. I was just wondering if maybe my optometrist was wrong or if there was a reason why she said that they are monthly. They want to charge me $64 per box, so I thought that was shady since market prices online say that each box costs about half of that.
Anyway, I think that is it. I know it was a lot but I will be very appreciative to anyone who can help in any way. Thank you!!
I’m not an expert but can answer some of your questions.
1. When you take the contact out of the solution take the contact and put it in the palm of your hand and apply a small amount of solution to the contact and rub it in your palm gently. This can loosen particles that sometimes stay on the Lens and also reduces the amount of the solution on the Lens which I personally find can sting. It can also sting if the eye is irritated already or the Lens is too old or you are suffering from allergies.
Ask about milder solutions if this persists as you may just have very sensitive eyes to the solution.
2. Ask you optometrist about contacts that breath more as the brand he has given you may not breath as well and you may be prone to dry eye and this is making it worse. (Acuview Oasis is the one I currently use and it has improved the dry eye a lot)
3. The vision blurring may be from the dry eye as you are staring into the computer and a different contact may be useful.
4. I have never heard of any disposable that should be used for more than 2 weeks but some people try to push it longer. This is not a good idea as the build up on the Lens can cause a really bad infection if used too long.
My optometrist told me these things as they are being extremely cautious since I only have the site in one eye but losing the sight in any eye is bad and I would not go back to any doctor that gave you that information.

1. It’s really likely that your eyes aren’t used to the contacts yet, the same thing happened to me when I started wearing contacts.
3. The same thing happens to me occasionally, seems normal.
I answered what I could.

1. Change to a more mild solution.
2. That literally makes no sense. Get eye drops, too. I have an astigmatism and my eyes don’t feel dry at all.
3. I work at a computer all day, no.
4. I have never heard of that brand.

I’m 27 and have been wearing lenses since I was 12. It is normal for your eyes to sting a little at first as they get used to something foreign being in them. I remember for the first two weeks I felt like If I looked down they would fall out. If they continue sting then try a different solution, there are tons of options at CVS or any drugstore (Bausch & Lomb is a very good mild one)
Second, I also have a stigmatism and have found that the Acuvue lenses work best for me, some other were uncomfortable, however there was still a degree of discomfort so I actually just switched back to regular shaped lenses and took the slight setback in perfect vision. Acuvue OASIS is good brand, though.
Lastly, Your eyes get a little blurry in front of screens because you don’t blink as much with contacts especially staring at a screen, over time you will eventually train yourself without realizing it to blink more frequently. Oh, and don’t get your contacts from your eye doctor they charge double what THEY pay for them. Call 1-800-CONTACTS, they are half of what you pay at the doctors and shipping is free and takes about 3 days. Just have your doctors name and number ready when you call because they have your doctor fax them the prescription. Hope this helps!!

Hi there, I have been wearing contacts for so long hopefully i can help.
Question 1: No it should not sting, make sure you read the box carefully. That is because there are certain type of contact wash that you would have to wait at least 8 hours before you can wear them. This means that you cannot rinse them.
Question 2: I use O2 Optics which feel really good. Some times its the solutions and some times its the brand of contacts. I am not too sure about the water content thing. If you feel uncomfortable then get some sample contacts to find out which works better for your eyes.
Question 3: This happens to me a lot especially if i have been wearing them for a really long time period. Make sure you take breaks while looking at a computer screen or T.V.
Question 4: Dont trust what they say about being able to wear contacts for only 1-2 weeks there is noooooo such thing. What I do is I wear my contact lense until they start getting uncomfotable. My contact are only to be worn 2 weeks that is what the box says. I am usually able to wear them for 5 weeks. Trust me nothing has happened to me, if my optomitrist couldnt tell that i had been wearing them for 5 weeks, because when she checked them she said that they were really clean. Whats funny is once i told her that i had been wearing them for 5 weeks she was like oh no you need to throw them out but with no explination why. So dont trust them on that they are all the same but they just make up a date for how long you can use them. They make soooo mcuh money off this.
I hope this helps!

4) Astimagtism prices are different than regular contacts. I have astigmatism too so I know this. I have to pay more for contacts. This is normal but not always the case. You can get monthlys as I have that (don’t remember the name because I haven’t been able to afford them for awhile). There’s a couple other brands that’ll have monthlys too but it’s much rarer for us people with astimagtism. Your doctor generally only prescribes one brand. Don’t ask me why this is but I found this out when I went to Lenscrafters and asked about colored contacts for astigmatism. They have them too but Lenscrafters didn’t prescribe them and they told me that junk about usually eye docs only prescribing one brand.
3) Yeah, it’s normal. It happens without contacts anyways. Your eye will dry and/or strain more when on the computer or watching television. Glasses can help as to reduce the strain.
2) This is why they make eye drops for your lenses. Use them. All contacts will basically do this.
1) It’s the solution AND you being a new contact lense owner. Myself, I never got used to it. I’m what you call "not a good candidate" for contacts. That is why I got monthlys. I hated doing it every single day, putting my finger near my eye. I used to press on my eyeball when I was a kid like Ace Ventura did but now, I’m kind of paranoid. However, I still get that stinging sensation. However, if it stings for more than a few minutes, take them out! Sometimes it’s a piece or speck of debris that’s making it sting. Your natural tears washes this out. Sometimes it’s the solution. Ask your eye doc if that particular solution is supposed to sting.
