as the years go by, robots do more and more jobs for us. Not typical robots of course, but large engines that provide us with more and more of our goods and services. Thanks to the internet, it takes 1 person writing one webcomic a couple of hours to produce something that hundreds of thousands of people spend a minute reading and talking about. this same of time invested to entertainment gleaned is the same almost everywhere in the entertainment industry and it’s becoming true of other industries as well. In the future no one will need to work because robots will do everything except for prostitution and therapy, which are in a sense the same service anyway. but since the market for labor is declining steadily, some people will not be able to afford the most basic of necessities due to chronic unemployment. Does capitalism offer a solution in any obvious way to this problem?
Yes it does. Robots will not make people unemployed unless they can be re-employed in other areas. The reason is simple. Unemployed people can’t buy anything - so the companies using robots wont be able to sell their junk.
Just as many manufacturing jobs disappeared over the last 15 years, people were re-employed in other areas. Of course, there’s always pain along the way - but that’s the price of progress & it’s been going on since the industrial revolution.
All robots do is force us to re-organize our economy because at the end of the day it can only succeed if people are working & can afford to buy the goods & services that are being produced.
That’s the way the market works.
